This site hosts news of, and links to, composition graduates from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University. Where possible, individual's websites are accessible by clicking their photo. WAAPA is home to one of the largest Composition and Music Technology programs in the country, catering to composers and sound artists from fields such as concert music, electronica, popular, jazz and experimental music. Students study traditional compositional skills such as orchestration and music structure along with digital and electronics sonic arts including recording, spatial and interactive software.
The course provides a balanced approach, developing intangible skills such as creativity and aesthetics along with practical skills such as logistical planning and documentation. Students take advantage of the unique opportunities available at ECU to collaborate in projects with dancers and theatre directors, film and media makers, visual artists and game programmers. Students from the program publicly present over 40 hours of music every year, on stage and in the twice-yearly Sound Spectrum festival. Composition and Music Technology has strong links with the community with students working in radio, in music series and festivals and with local businesses.
Composition is a problem-solving degree with strong employment outcomes for graduates in the field. Many graduates maintain exciting careers working in art music (For examples see Melanie Robinson, Johannes Luebbers, Rebecca Smith, Dan Thorne, Mace Francis, Alice Humphries, Kynan Tan, Sam Gillies, Mitch Mollison, Michael Terren, Alex Turley, Josten Myburgh), commercial music (Karl Thomas, Kučka, Matt Mclean), writing for film and media (Chris de Groot, Kevin Penkin, Ellie Cumming, Sean Tinnion), and theatre and dance (Rachael Dease, Dane Yates) and in studio production and programming jobs. This site is not an official site of Edith Cowan University, but is maintained by staff from the Composition and Music Technology Course..
