WAAPA is home to one of the largest Composition and Music Technology programs in the country, catering to composers and sound artists from fields such as concert, experimental, electronica, popular, jazz, film and stage music. Students study traditional compositional skills such as orchestration and music structure along with digital and electronic sonic arts including studio recording, spatial and interactive software.
The course provides a balanced approach, developing intangible skills such as creativity and aesthetics along with practical skills such as collaboration, logistical planning and documentation. Students take advantage of the unique opportunities available at ECU to collaborate in projects with dancers and theatre directors, film and media makers, visual artists and game programmers.. Students from the program publicly present over 40 hours of music every year, on stage and in the twice-yearly Sound Spectrum concerts. Composition and Music Technology has strong links in the community with students and graduates working in radio, in music series and festivals and with local businesses.
Since 1992 there have been over 150 graduates from the program. Composition is a problem-solving degree with strong employment outcomes for graduates in the field, about 80% finding work in the music industry. The principal graduate careers include:
